Ever wanted to start a business?

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to start your own business? To write the rules? To have something that's yours?

Years ago, someone said to me, “Do what you love and the money will follow.” Deep inside, I wanted to believe her, but it seemed so idealistic. So irresponsible. So impossible.

Maybe that's because when I wanted to leave my first job, my dad said to me, “Carin, it's not supposed to be fun; that's why it's called WORK.”

He said that, but he modeled something completely different. My dad was a talented and passionate architect who after 6 months of working for the top architecture firm in Detroit, left to start his own firm. It was hard work. He built the business from scratch, attracted clients, and struggled to survive the economic recession right when I was born.

I know it wan't easy, but we always had food to eat, a roof over our heads, clothes and an annual vacation.
He did what he loved and with a LOT of hard work, the money followed.
We weren't millionaires, but we had enough, and most importantly, I saw my dad work his passion.

So when I realized I wanted to do this empowerment work in the world, I knew the only way was to have my own business.
But I was terrified. My Fear Brain screeched:
“Are you crazy?”
“Who do you think you are?”
“What if you don't make any money?”
“What if everyone hates you and you lose everything?”

So I held back from moving forward for 8 years. 8 years of depression. 8 years of feeling stuck. 8 years of feeling like a loser for not following my dreams.

I wish that I knew then what I know now: It won't be easy, but it is possible. You can have work that lights you up from the inside out. There are so many people who can teach you what you need – from video to social media to accounting to legal needs. And if you put the time, energy, focus, and work in to doing what you love, the money will follow.

I've learned a lot of this the hard way, so I want to make it easier for you. That's why on this week's episode of The PurposeGirl Podcast, I interview Genecia Alluora, the Founder of Soul Rich Woman, South East Asia's leading network for female entrepreneurs. Growing up in poverty, she started working when she was a child to pay family bills. She's overcome so much in life to lead a network of 11,000 female entrepreneurs across Asia. In this episode, she talks about mindset, overcoming limiting beliefs, and stepping out of your comfort zone. You can listen to it here!

She even inspired me to think bigger about my potential and impact. At one point, she said, “Put a dollar sign in front of your phone number and make that your goal!”

I laughed out loud, but I knew she was serious. Someone somewhere makes $6,464,830,000. So why not me?
Why not you?
That's what I love about Genecia – she makes you think!

If you've been thinking of starting your own business and you want some inspiration and motivation, listen here. Or if you have friends who have wanted to start a business, send them this link to listen.

And in the meantime, here are a few Purpose Power Tips for you:
1. Get clear on your purpose: Purpose is the active way you uniquely impact the world in a way that lights you up. It's being your true self and doing all that's in your heart. It's your why. Research shows that people who have purpose are happier, less depressed, and more optimistic and resilient through challenges. Get clear on who you are, what you're passionate about, and the impact you want to make on the world.

2. Write your goals: People who have written goals are more likely to achieve them. Be clear and specific, and hold yourself accountable. Even better to have someone else hold you accountable! Then celebrate EVERY small step! Even Googling “how to set up taxes” is a step, so celebrate that. Brain research shows that positivity tells your brain “do more of this” so celebrate it all!

3. Adopt a positive mindset: Our brains try to stop us by telling us what we can't do, so we have to flip our mindset from “I can't” to “How can I?” From ‘I don't know how” to “Who can help?” Even if you have a “failure” – ask what you can learn and move on. Take every objection your brain says and flip it into a question that puts you into forward action.

You have it in you to create anything you desire. It probably won't be easy. And it will definitely take work. But my love, you've done hard things before and you do hard work EVERY DAY. You may as well do it for something you're passionate about and is on purpose for you.

To your success!

XO,

Carin

Freedom – Our Time is Now

I'm sorry I've been a bit quiet here – I've been in the middle of personal transformation and to be honest, some rupture.

The state of our world left me feeling a bit speechless, heart broken, and honestly, somewhat powerless. It's been hard to think about celebrating Freedom when migrant children are stuck in caged camps just a few states over. Part of me wanted to just send you positive messages, but it felt a bit like putting lipstick on a pig. Part of me wanted to pretend it's not happening. Part of me convinced myself that it's not my job to talk about these issues.

But in these times, we can't just turn a blind eye or hide under the covers.
We're needed now more than ever.

My soul sister Stacey said to me, “When we look back at these horrific times, our grandchildren will ask what we were doing to make a difference.”
This struck a chord.
My grandparents were Holocaust survivors and they needed regular ol' citizens to be active. Plenty of people turned a blind eye to their plight. Plenty of people just went about their business hoping it would go away. The United States sent boatloads of Holocaust victims back to the gas chambers.

But some people rose up.

It was the kindness, generosity, purpose, and courage of average, every day people in Cleveland, Ohio who helped my grandfather come to America.
So I've been struggling with the question: What can I do?
What's my part?
Perhaps you've been struggling with this, too.

As I meditated and got quiet, I heard the answer. The Goddess said: “You get every woman up on her feet living her true purpose. You call upon every woman who has been afraid to start a business, or go for the C-level job, to do it because we need more women in leadership. You empower every woman who has wanted to leave her cushy job to start a non-profit to go do it, because we need more compassion and love for those in need. You call upon every woman who has had the desire to write a book or become a teacher or start a podcast to go do it because women hold deep and ancient wisdom in our bones which will heal the world. You remind every mother that SHE has the POWER to to teach her children ‘Never Again.'”

Every single one of us has a role to play in healing the world.
And we are needed NOW.

YOU are needed now: EMPOWERED and living your true purpose.

How do I know? Women are still the major caretakers of children, the major caretakers of the home, women do the majority of the shopping, thus we are the major consumers, AND women are graduating in higher rates than men from universities in the US. Think about it – when you follow your heart, you teach your children to do the same. When you speak up, you inspire neighbors to do the same. When you spend your money on causes that matter to you, you change the future. So my love, WOMEN HOLD THE POWER – AND CAN CHANGE THIS WORLD.

The key is to be EMPOWERED.
It's making a decision to stop playing small.

It's about getting out of your own way to finally be free.
It's about being honest with yourself about your dreams and desires and longings.
It's about believing in yourself to make a difference.

My love, I believe in YOU.
I know you're here for more.
I know you're a Queen.
I know you can change the world.
We will change the world together. You don't have to take on immigration – take on your passion – and do it with fierce heart, loving compassion, and gritty tenacity.

In the coming weeks, I'll be coming to you with opportunities to play big. Opportunities to be Empowered. Opportunities to rock it out and make a difference as only you can. I can't wait to change the world with you! And THAT is worth CELEBRATING!!

Here's to our FREEDOM!

Carin

Are You Pretending? Do You Live By SHOULDS?

“I don’t know what I want.”
“I just want to be happy.”
“I feel lost.”

When I first met Libby, she was the first to admit she was not living the life she had dreamt of for herself. Although she kept appearances expertly, her life felt hollow.

The thing was, to all outside observers, Libby looked like she had it all together. She looked happy. The online version of Libby was thriving: she went to Princeton, she made a great paycheck at a hot new startup in San Francisco. When people asked how she was doing she told them she was Great! In that false chipper voice that only half disguised how unhappy she really was.

But underneath she was in deep pain. She was on autopilot, hammering through her days, toughing it out until the weekend when she drowned out the emptiness every way she knew how.

She was cruel to her body.
She numbed her pain.
She pretended her way through life.

When we first met, I asked her what she really wanted – deeply, truly wanted.
And then we got clear what was getting in her way of having it.
I took her through powerful exercises to get clear on the masks Libby was wearing: all the SHOULDS in her life that were trapping her in unhealthy patterns.

It turns out that Libby’s SHOULDS had a powerful hold on her. Maybe you can relate. After untangling a web of fears keeping her from living her most joyful life, we got clear on Libby’s innermost desire: she wanted to be a writer.

Step by step, we created her path to purpose.
She first left her tech sales job and city life in San Francisco to travel the world.
She then started caring for her body, mind, and spirit.
And now, she has nearly finished her first book.

Libby transitioned from living a life of SHOULDS to a life of purpose, and it has completely transformed her life.

Every single one of us has an innate, deep-seated purpose in life, and when we peel back the layers of SHOULDS, when we drop the masks, when we discover who we truly are and what we deeply desire, we step into our true selves and greatest happiness.

You, too, need to drop the SHOULDS to activate your happiest life. And I want to teach you how.

If Libby's story resonates with you, if you're tired of living according to the SHOULDS and crave deeper happiness and fulfillment, I invite you to click here and get in touch with me. Let's talk.

Life Wasn’t Supposed to Be This Way…

“I feel stuck.”
“I’ve made a lot of choices to please others, instead of myself.”
“I want to feel again – all the feelings – joy passion, love.”
“I'm not living up to my potential, my dreams. Something got lost along the way.”
“Life just wasn't supposed to be this way.”

Have you ever said any of these things to yourself? I know I have.
I just finished my first 5 Day Purpose Course and these are just some of the comments that the women shared about why they were taking a course with me to live on purpose.

My heart sank with every comment because I've felt all of this. It was August of 2008 and I was staring at my computer screen, lost. I felt like such a fraud. Everyone thought I loved my job but I knew deep down that it wasn't for me. My whole life felt like a fraud. The city I lived in, the job I had, the relationship I was in.

But I didn't know how to move forward. I was too scared.

Then my friend, Sue, suggested her life coach. Sue was growing so much – she had so much confidence and was taking new risks. When I met her coach, I burst into tears. He was so gentle, so supportive, so encouraging about me and my purpose.

But when he offered to work with me, I said “no.” I felt guilty spending money on myself. I felt like I should be able to do it myself.

But a few weeks later, I was back to feeling like a fraud again. I wasn't moving forward. I needed help. So I called him again and with his support, I applied to graduate school, the first step on this journey to being your life purpose coach. I needed help to move forward.

We all do. At the end of the 5 Day Course, these same women said:
“So enlightening & having more clarity now that I never realized.”
“Feeling so inspired. So grateful for the wisdom, Carin.”
“I now believe in myself.”

I want you to believe in yourself and have clarity too. My deepest is desire is for you to live on purpose. I so badly want to inspire and empower millions of women to change their lives and go for their dreams that it sometimes hurts my heart.

Living on Purpose gives me the greatest joy I've ever known.
Living on Purpose fulfills my heart and soul and lets me leave a legacy.
Living on Purpose gives me freedom to travel the world (& be paid for it).
Living on Purpose makes me feel PROUD, COURAGEOUS, and BADASS!

I want you to live on purpose too.

As I've told you, it took being robbed at gunpoint to finally take steps toward pursuing my purpose. But with a coach's help, I realized that I'm worthy of my dreams. I'm worthing of feeling joy. I'm worthy of loving myself and making a huge impact on the world.

And so are you.

Why People Fail {video}

I was working on my first book when I learned why some people succeed and others fail.

I was 28 years old, newly divorced and the words were flowing out of me. My story of love, heartbreak, and how every young woman could heal from young divorce. I was sure I had a best seller.

And then I met a top agent from a top agency in LA and I was sure this was IT!!

But after reading my manuscript, he rejected my book.

Let's face it, at 28, I felt like he had rejected ME.

Having grown up thinking I had to be perfect at everything, I had no idea how to deal with this rejection. I felt like a loser and failure and the shame was more than I could bear.

So I gave up. For years.

I hear this story all the time. You were doing great with your exercise and eating plan until someone sent you candy for Valentines Day and months later, you're still beating yourself up and far away from the gym. You were almost done with your business plan when a family member got sick and you had to take time off and then you were too tired to start again.

You fall off the wagon and figure, “What's the point? I knew I couldn't do it.”

There's only ONE difference between people who succeed and people who fail. The #1 difference between people who realize their dreams and those who don't. In this week's Happy Monday motivational video, I share what that #1 difference is so that you can fulfill your purpose and succeed at all of your dreams.  Watch it below:

Here's to YOUR purpose and success!
