Happy Monday: How Do You Treat Yourself? [Video]

How do you take care of yourself? Where do you put yourself on the priority list?

I'm just back from Tulum, Mexico, where I led a transformative retreat for 8 beautiful brave women. We practiced meditation and yoga at sunrise, swam like mermaids in turquoise fresh waters, and claimed our desires with a Mayan shaman.

Though I lead a lot of retreats, a lesson hit me loud and clear this time:

Self care is no longer optional. Self care is critical for a happy, purposeful life.

For example, one of the retreat attendees became widowed just a few months ago. She has a young daughter and between taking care of her, her husband, and her stepkids, she had always come last. However, she knows that how she treats herself will make the difference in how her daughter treats herself.

So here she was.
In Mexico.
Treating herself like a Goddess.
And declaring light after a new dawn.

Tomorrow, February 13 is International Day of Self-Love, so I taped this video for you to declare your own light this week – for you to start treating yourself the way you deserve.

I'm celebrating Self-Love day with a massage, coffee with a friend and time to journal. How will you spend it?

With so much love,
Carin

Happy Monday: How To Find Your Purpose [Video]

Happy Monday!

You are here for Purpose.
I promise.
And this Happy Monday is to get on your purpose path forward.

Greetings from Miami where all weekend, I've been teaching incredible people positive psychology – the science of happiness and human flourishing.

As I looked at my amazing students laughing and learning, I reflected on how a week ago I was speaking at a women's conference in London, days ago I was on the radio in NYC, and next week, I'm taking women on retreat to Mexico. I found myself overwhelmed with awe and gratitude that I am doing exactly what I've wanted to do – travel all over the world teaching people to flourish.

This is my purpose because it combines my strengths and talents and passions and wisdom. What's your purpose?

A client of mine grew up with an immigrant single mother and because education gave her a path forward, her purpose is to ensure that every child has the skills necessary to thrive.

There's a way that you, too, are uniquely meant to impact the world.
A way that will make a difference AND light you up from the inside out.

In this week's Happy Monday video, I share:

  • What purpose is (and isn't)
  • The 4 components of purpose
  • How to get on your purpose path

This Changed My Life

Do you have something you've wanted to do your whole life but haven't had the courage or time or motivation?

As you may know, I've wanted to write a book my whole life.
I distinctly remember being 29, freshly divorced, trying to find myself and my path.
The only place that comforted me was Barnes & Noble.
I would arrive early on a Saturday morning, buy a large latte, settle into an oversized tan leather chair and surround myself with self-help books.

As I flipped through title after title, my heart opened, my blood danced with delight.
I envisioned my own book among the pile.
I had been writing a book about what it's like to be young and divorced. About your two best friends getting married just when you are getting divorced, about being the only divorcee at your 10 year high school reunion.

And then I got my lucky break.
I shared my dream on a random blind date when the guy said, “I have a friend who's a big agent.”
Next thing you know, I'm sending my manuscript off to William Morris – the biggest agent – with butterflies in my stomach and certainty in my heart.
He called the next day.
“You're a great writer, Carin, but I can't publish this.”
It was too much my own story, he said.
This was before Eat. Pray. Love. so little did he know that memoirs were about to be the hottest thing.

My heart knew it had to be my story, but my fear-brain took over and shut down the book altogether.
I stopped writing.
I quit my dream.

That began years of depression that eventually led me to violent nightly panic attacks.

And then I found Positive Psychology, the science of happiness and human flourishing. My psychiatrist suggested that I didn't need more drugs, but I rather, I needed to start DOing my dreams. Taking action.

So I did – I traveled to Paris by myself, I bought a boat, I ran a marathon.

And I started to feel better.

Then I was robbed at gunpoint and knew I had to pursue the biggest dream of all – becoming an empowerment author, coach, and speaker.
As you may know, I left my 6-figure, VP-title, corporate job to get my Masters degree in Positive Psychology and start this work. I intentionally wrote 100 pages for my thesis about Purpose (even though it was supposed to be 30) because I wanted to finally write a book.

That was 6 years ago and still the book isn't done.

Why?
FEAR.
Fear that I'll be rejected again.
Fear that no one will buy it.
Fear that you'll hate it and post all sorts of mean things on Amazon.
So I've written and re-written those 100 pages 300 times.
I created coaching programs to empower thousands of people to live their purpose.
I created a day and a half workshop on the material that is now taught in the Certificate of Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) program worldwide.

But still, no book.

Until my dear friend Louisa pulled me aside this summer and said, “Carin, there are now 800 CAPP grads who have your Purpose material. How are you going to feel if one of them writes your book before you do?”

BAM!
My gut dropped.
My breath stopped.
I felt so sick I went to a toilet to try vomitting.

And I knew what I had to do: Finish the book. Send it to a publisher. So Louisa coached me, helping me work out the kinks in the structure, and holding me accountable to a deadline, and I'm thrilled to report that on January 31, I turned in my book proposal to a publisher!

The publisher may accept it, she may not, I may send it to others, I may self-publish, and none of it matters. What matters is that I'm fulfilling my lifelong dream and FINALLY, this weight has been lifted. Nothing can stop me now from becoming a published author.

What's crazy is that I knew everything Louisa was telling me. I help people fulfill their dreams All. The. Time. But sometimes, we need someone else to help us see the blocks, and hold us accountable to move forward.

That's why I love coaching you.
I want to do for you what Louisa just did for me.
Get you moving on your dreams.
Get you living your purpose.

Happy Monday: Get Unstuck and Move Forward [Video]

I spent this past weekend co-leading a retreat about ALCHEMY. It may seem far-fetched, but you really can turn anything into gold.

Here's how: You move forward.

Rather than letting an obstacle stop you, or a fear derail you, or a disappointment dissuade you, you move forward. I've had to overcome so many challenges on this road. I've launched programs that no one signed up for. I've been rejected by media. I've had people write online that they don't like me. And it HURTS. But my mission is bigger than me, and yours is bigger than you. So I dust off and change my perspective or approach or contact.

And it's all been worth it because the pain of regret is unbearable.

Research shows that happier people take steps toward their goals with grit and perseverance and feel better when they've achieved. In today's episode of Happy Monday, I share why and how to continue moving forward toward your dreams – and if you don't know your dreams, then I share a process to get you started. As a reminder, Happy Monday is my new weekly YouTube video series of super short clips to help you live your happiest, best week. Enjoy and please, share with friends as I'm trying to start a revolution of happiness and purpose, and I need you.

Please, post in the video or on my blog about your dreams. May all of your dreams come true. I love you.

XO,
Carin

#metoo, Abuse, Oprah and Purpose

After watching Oprah’s speech at the Golden Globes, I’ve wanted to email you but there is so much to say and I wasn’t quite sure how to put all of my feelings into words.

First, #metoo

I haven’t spoken about it much, but when I was 17, my first love physically abused me. She and I were so young, so confused about our sexuality, and so in love that when I tried to end the relationship so I could date boys, she began hitting me.

This pain and shame has stayed with me for 26 years.

Though she and I have reconnected as adults and she has apologized, I’ve stayed mostly silent about it out of love and protection for her.

But staying silent has made me feel small.
Insecure.
Less than.

So at a woman’s conference in December, when the leader asked everyone who has been abused in any way to please stand up, I slowly stood as my knees shaked. I was in the front row and when I turned around, the sea of nearly 2500 women standing took my breath away.

Then a woman screamed – A guttural, piercing, scream. The kind of scream we yearn for, but rarely allow ourselves.

So the leader said, “Let’s all join her.”
Together, 2500 women screamed out our pain, our anger, our sadness, our fear. Tears streamed down my face as my knees dropped to the ground and I screamed out my pain from the depth of my soul.

Then I felt empty. Pure. Whole. FREE.
A woman came up to me later and told me that her pain has been so bottled up that she had been unable to scream – until she saw me. My truth unblocked her pain and shed her fear.

As Oprah said, “Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we have.”

If I’ve learned anything on this Purpose journey, it’s that you’ve lived your story to share it and help others. Every time I talk about my pain – miscarriage, anxiety, leaving Corporate, depression, I get emails saying, “Thank you, me too.”

Your TRUTH is your purpose.
Your TRUTH is inspiring.
Your TRUTH is needed.

And your TRUTH isn’t just pain. Your truth is your joy, your soul’s essence, your passions. Your truth is who you are beneath the layers of guilt and fear and shame that have been put upon you. Your truth is who you are underneath the masks you wear, the perfection you desire, and the roles you play.

Your truth is who you are and why you’re here.

And my love, you’re here for purpose. Every single one of us is here for purpose – and you are no exception.

Even if you feel lost, stuck, or like you have no idea who you are…Your purpose, your truth, is there underneath. We just have to uncover it.

The question is if you’ll allow yourself to stop hiding and become the woman you were born to be. We are needed now more than ever. Your gifts, your strengths, your story is needed. We need your truth.

So I hope you join me this year to make 2018 the year that you discover your purpose, to make 2018 the year you claim your truth, to make 2018 the year where you share your gifts and shine your light so brightly that you inspire and empower others. Your family, your community, your work need your purpose – and you deserve it.

May we all know purpose and truth,

With so much love,

Carin
