I know times are really anxious right now, so I'm sending you deep breaths and good health as we all navigate. At times like this, it's important to pause and reflect on what's important in life.
Last week at Amazon's International Women's Day event, I asked the audience this question:
If there were a gun pointed at your head right now, what would you regret never having done?
Pause for a moment and think about it. See what comes up for you.
For me, it wasn't a hypothetical. As you may know, 10 years ago, I was robbed at gun point when returning home from a bad blind date. A young man followed me into my condominium building and pulled a gun. While laying on the ground, begging for my life, screaming, “Please don't hurt me, please don't hurt me,” I silently prayed, “It's been a good life, tell my parents I say goodbye.”
Just then a voice came over me and said, “Oh no – you were put on this earth for purpose and women need you.”
See, until that moment, I had dreamt of PurposeGirl. I had seen you and hundreds of women in an auditorium, on your feet screaming, “YES!” to discovering and following your purpose! I had seen myself on air and on a computer screen teaching 50 women how to get unstuck and take bold steps toward your dreams. I had envisioned a dozen women dancing with me on retreat as we stepped into our power.
But I didn't follow that vision. I felt afraid – no, TERRIFIED. Terrified of failing, of looking stupid, of being rejected, of people judging me, of …. well, of everything!
But begging for my life with a gun pointed at my head, I realized I was going to die without ever pursuing my dream.
And the PAIN OF REGRET was worse than any fear.
So I made myself a promise – If I live, I WILL pursue my purpose no matter what.
Exactly at that moment, the man took my purse and ran.
I had no idea HOW I would make this dream a reality; I didn't even have CLARITY around what the dream actually was. I just believed in my desire for purpose and took one step forward – hire a coach to help me sort it out. With him, I solidified my purpose, created a plan, and began to put it into action. I went back to graduate school, started PurposeGirl, and a million purposeful steps later, here I am emailing you.
When faced with a near death experience again two years ago, I was able to look myself in the mirror and know that I had lived without regret – and that felt amazing!!! I knew I was ok with each moment, no matter what happened. 🙂
Research shows that at the end of life, people most regret what they did NOT do. They regret the dream they did NOT follow.
I talk about this more in last week's PurposeGirl Power Bite, which you can view here.
So, what will you regret never having done? Following a specific dream? Finding your purpose? Making a bold, delicious travel move? Diving deep into love?
