My Summer Reading List

I hope you're enjoying your summer! I just joined a pool and am loving a few minutes to relax and read every day. People often ask me for book recommendations, so below are a combination of books I love and what I'm reading right now. Get one, get them all, and/or send me your favorites so I can enjoy them too and keep spreading the love to more people!

Every woman must read… PUSSY by Regena Thomashauer (AKA “Mama Gena”)

I just completed a 4 month program with Mama Gena and it's changed my life. She has helped me own my sensuality, my sexuality, and my power. I have more fun in life than I've ever had because I'm focused on my pleasure, something that us women usually feel guilty about. I know that the title may give you pause, but don't let it. This book is a New York Times Bestseller and Mama G explains why it has to be called Pussy. Do not walk – RUN – to your local bookstore or Amazon to get this book and then please please please comment below and tell me how it impacted you!

If you're stuck with your creativity…. Big Magic by Liz Gilbert

I've been in love with Liz Gilbert since Eat.Pray.Love. (If you haven't read that yet, please do! Click here to get that too.) Liz Gilbert is a creative genius and a very REAL woman with real fears and real pain and a real life, so she gets us. She's taken all of her own tips and wisdom and put them into this book to get your juices flowing and your heart reconnected with your creativity. Big Magic will re-ignite your creativity, re-energize you around your creative desires and prompt you to take action now. She shares what to do with fear, how to be creative every day, and why you need to get started now before quitting your job or having lots of money and free time. If you want help with money… You Are A Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero

I am absolutely, positively in love with Jen Sincero. I've read her original book, You Are A Badass at least 3 times. In this fun, witty, fierce, and practical book, Jen kicks your financial booty. She gets you off the couch and onto making money. She'll help you reset your old stories about money and rewrite them so that you know your worth. Plus, she gives practical stories that will get you started now on making more money. When I have a desire, rather than cut corners in my life to get it, I always think about how I can make the money to pay for it and it works every time. This book will help you do that! If you want to step into your Greatness… Sacred Success by Barbara Stanny

I'm listening to this book right now every time I go to the gym, and I keep needing to put down the weights to take notes. Barbara Stanny is a financial expert for women and a best-selling author who lost nearly everything and needed a break. Connection with spirit and universal truth became her guiding light. In this beautiful book, she connects spirituality with success to help you discover and achieve your Greatness. She pulls a lot from A Course in Miracles, Rumi, and Ghandi. Fear causes doubt and frantic busy-ness. Greatness is your soul's purpose. Let's read it together.

A must-read for everyone, especially if you want peace, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

This beautiful, profound, short book give you the answers to greater inner peace. The author gives you four agreements to make with yourself, such as never taking things personally and being impeccable with your word. The agreements are simple and profound and shared in a beautiful way that gives you the tools to be connect and finally at peace in life. I love, love, love this book. It's a must read for everyone.

If you want a FUN read to re-ignite joy and pleasure in your romantic life, especially with men…. Mama Gena's Owner's and Operator's Guide to Men by Regena Thomashauer

The title of this book rubbed me the wrong way at first. I don't own or operate my husband. And, I love Mama Gena so I decided to read it and am having so much fun with this book! It's making me laugh out loud, connect with my desires in the bedroom and giving me tools to improve my sex life and my marriage. Mama Gena is brilliant with men and wise about the sacredness of women. She is unabashed in her views that every woman is a Goddess and unapologetic in her language. I learn as much about how to be unapologetic and speak my voice from witnessing her do so, as I do from the book content itself. I'm reading this one by the pool every day and at night for a few minutes. Let's read it together and share our favorite bits!

The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 018: Hope And Optimism

No matter what we’ve been through, no matter what kinds of traumas we’ve experienced, no matter what we hear in the news, we can always regain hope. When crappy things happen – and they most certainly will – we have a number of choices in what we do. Positive psychology, the science of happiness and human flourishing, offers us a number of practical, effective strategies that we can employ to keep going, to grow, and to thrive, and to regain our hope.

I begin with a discussion of the relationship between goals and hope, and how goals start in the mind while hope starts in the heart, with emotions. Both are vital, but hope should precede goals. Hope is the igniter for all of your goals. According to Hope Theory (by C. R. Snyder), hope gives us motivation and strategies towards our goals. It’s normal, and healthy, to feel down, to feel hopeless, to drown yourself in Ben and Jerry’s, for a while. But you can’t stay there. You need to move through it. And all you need is the tiniest bit of hope, the realization that things can get better, that the world can be a little brighter. I offer concrete examples from women with whom I’ve worked, women who felt hopeless and in whom I helped cultivate a renewed feeling of hope.

I share a story about Dr. Chris Feudtner, who works with terminally ill children in palliative care at CHOP in Philadelphia, and how he and his staff help the families of these children find something to be hopeful about.

I share the heartbreaking and awe-inspiring story of Karla Jacinto, a victim of human trafficking who survived years of horror and still rebuilt her hope in the world. She now uses her experiences as fuel to fight for others. Hope gives us motivation, agency, and strategies. Drawing from this example, I consider what strategies I can come up with to rebuild my own hope in a troubled world.

I introduce the concepts of pessimistic thinking styles and optimistic thinking styles, how to shift from the former to the latter, and why this is so important. Adopting an optimistic thinking style is crucial to overcoming hopelessness and to developing and implementing strategies to move our lives forward, and I end with a few Purpose Power Tips to help you nurture an optimistic thinking style. How To Be On Purpose At Work

“I can't just leave my job and family to follow my dream!” My client was in tears. Her heart craved purpose but she felt trapped and defeated.

She's not alone. Most of us yearn to make a difference. It's part of our human nature. We're social animals so we're wired to want to support our tribe and do our part to impact the greater good.
Living on purpose means that you're intentional in actively making a unique impact on others' lives.

When Josh and I got married 4 years ago, my wedding dress was super low cut in back. I tried every expensive lingerie store I could think of and couldn't find the right bra. Then just a few days before the wedding, I went to Victoria's Secret and the sales associate gently took my hand and showed me the perfect product. I jumped up and down, hugging her. That day, she lived a greater purpose: Me feeling great on my wedding day.

My dear friend Bonnie passed away of breast cancer last year. She and I were once at a retreat where we shared our deepest body shame. With tears streaming down her face, she slowly took off her shirt and showed me her flat chest where her breasts had once been. A lump filled my throat as I told her how beautiful she is. She shared how she once spent a day shopping for pretty bras and panties and how it made her feel like a beautiful woman.

Fast forward, I was recently facilitating Victoria's Secret executives in a half-day workshop on Flourishing. I shared Bonnie's story and the room fell silent. “What's your purpose?” I asked them. “Not your sales goals or manufacturing goals. From the highest, most elevated place, what do you want your customers to think of you? How do you want them to feel when in your store or wearing your products?”

“Beautiful,” one person whispered.
“Inspired.” said another.
“Alive!”

They continued to paint a gorgeous, heartfelt, powerful and meaningful vision. They imagined how women's lives can be forever changed through their work. They dreamt bigger and more expansively than ever before. My heart soared with inspiration and excitement.

Afterwards, someone came up to me in tears saying, “I have a teenage daughter, so this really hit home.” Living on purpose at work can make a difference at home too. We talked about how the team can make a huge difference for girls and women globally, just by thinking of purpose every day at work.

You can too. Ask yourself and your team:

What's our bigger mission here?
How do we make a difference in the lives of others?
How can I make a difference right here and now?

According to Gallup, only 30% of the U.S. workforce is actively engaged and excited about their work, but when we work with purpose, that changes. According to a 2016 LinkedIn survey, employees who are purpose-focused outperform their colleagues on almost every metric.

Put simply, with purpose, you'll be more successful and enjoy your work more. With purpose, you'll enjoy your life more.

This doesn't mean that you give up on your other dreams. On the contrary – purpose in one area of life leads to purpose in every area of life.If you have a dream of writing your memoir, someone needs to hear your story. If you secretly yearn to paint, then your unique vision is meant to be shared. If you wish you could go back to school to teach, then one day you need to. We only get this one life to fulfill our deepest dreams.

And in the meantime, while you create a plan toward your heart desires, you can begin living on purpose right here, right now, right where you are. It's not either/or. It's both/and. And you can begin today.

Freedom – Our Time is Now

I'm sorry I've been a bit quiet here – I've been in the middle of personal transformation and to be honest, some rupture.

The state of our world left me feeling a bit speechless, heart broken, and honestly, somewhat powerless. It's been hard to think about celebrating Freedom when migrant children are stuck in caged camps just a few states over. Part of me wanted to just send you positive messages, but it felt a bit like putting lipstick on a pig. Part of me wanted to pretend it's not happening. Part of me convinced myself that it's not my job to talk about these issues.

But in these times, we can't just turn a blind eye or hide under the covers.
We're needed now more than ever.

My soul sister Stacey said to me, “When we look back at these horrific times, our grandchildren will ask what we were doing to make a difference.”
This struck a chord.
My grandparents were Holocaust survivors and they needed regular ol' citizens to be active. Plenty of people turned a blind eye to their plight. Plenty of people just went about their business hoping it would go away. The United States sent boatloads of Holocaust victims back to the gas chambers.

But some people rose up.

It was the kindness, generosity, purpose, and courage of average, every day people in Cleveland, Ohio who helped my grandfather come to America.
So I've been struggling with the question: What can I do?
What's my part?
Perhaps you've been struggling with this, too.

As I meditated and got quiet, I heard the answer. The Goddess said: “You get every woman up on her feet living her true purpose. You call upon every woman who has been afraid to start a business, or go for the C-level job, to do it because we need more women in leadership. You empower every woman who has wanted to leave her cushy job to start a non-profit to go do it, because we need more compassion and love for those in need. You call upon every woman who has had the desire to write a book or become a teacher or start a podcast to go do it because women hold deep and ancient wisdom in our bones which will heal the world. You remind every mother that SHE has the POWER to to teach her children ‘Never Again.'”

Every single one of us has a role to play in healing the world.
And we are needed NOW.

YOU are needed now: EMPOWERED and living your true purpose.

How do I know? Women are still the major caretakers of children, the major caretakers of the home, women do the majority of the shopping, thus we are the major consumers, AND women are graduating in higher rates than men from universities in the US. Think about it – when you follow your heart, you teach your children to do the same. When you speak up, you inspire neighbors to do the same. When you spend your money on causes that matter to you, you change the future. So my love, WOMEN HOLD THE POWER – AND CAN CHANGE THIS WORLD.

The key is to be EMPOWERED.
It's making a decision to stop playing small.

It's about getting out of your own way to finally be free.
It's about being honest with yourself about your dreams and desires and longings.
It's about believing in yourself to make a difference.

My love, I believe in YOU.
I know you're here for more.
I know you're a Queen.
I know you can change the world.
We will change the world together. You don't have to take on immigration – take on your passion – and do it with fierce heart, loving compassion, and gritty tenacity.

In the coming weeks, I'll be coming to you with opportunities to play big. Opportunities to be Empowered. Opportunities to rock it out and make a difference as only you can. I can't wait to change the world with you! And THAT is worth CELEBRATING!!
