Do You Beat Yourself Up?

Last week, I was on Sirius XM Radio  talking about “self-love” when the question arose: what the heck is self-love?? Does it mean to take more bubble baths? Get a massage? Tell yourself positive affirmations all day long?
Self-love is everywhere these days, but most of us don’t know what it means or how to achieve it. And worse, too many of us engage self-loathing, constantly beating ourselves up for things we did or didn’t do. Telling ourselves that we’re too fat, too thin, a loner, a loser, not successful enough…and the list goes on. Most people I know say things to themselves that they would never say to anyone else! Myself included – even though I am a coach, I am still constantly working to revise self-blame into acceptance and compassion. At some point in our lives, we were told that it wasn’t okay to be who we were. It’s time to shift that paradigm. Self-love means to love ourselves as we would a child. To delight in ourselves, to accept ourselves, to forgive ourselves. Yes, forgive. It’s that big. However, if you’re like me and many of my clients, sometimes it seems too big. A bumper sticker touting self-love is not going to suddenly help you embrace your thighs!

Thanks to my coach, this month, I’ve been playing with a new concept: Self-Okayness. Be okay with your thighs. Be okay with your quiet nature. Be okay with your choices. Be okay with your truth. You don’t have to yet love what you currently consider “flaws” – not yet. For now, can you just try to be okay with them?

In this week’s PurposeFULL message, I share this idea of “self-okayness” and how to help us all be more okay with ourselves.

When you learn to be okay with yourself, you more fully step into your power, your purpose and your best life. Contact me with your story about self-okayness – or if you are looking to learn how to be okay with yourself. I am here to support you.
