But as much as we want purpose, it can be really scary. I was terrified to discover my unique purpose, and even more terrified to take the leap to do this work in the world – especially because my father said it was “the stupidest decision he's ever heard.”

This is why I stayed stuck for 8 years. 8 years in a career that I knew didn't fit me. 8 years looking to bad relationships to fill me. 8 years of begging a psychiatrist for more and more medications.

You know what Joshua? Uncovering and living my purpose was the BEST DECISION of my life.

So why did I wait?

Fear and Anxiety are a Part of Happiness

I have a confession: Sometimes I have overwhelming anxiety. Like debilitating – can't move forward – can't breathe Anxiety with a capital “A.” Maybe you do too.
And maybe I'm crazy for posting this here. Sometimes when I share my “darker” truths, friends and family text me, “You can't do that! They come to you for happiness!” And that's why I post the truth. Because you come to me for Happiness. You can't be truly happy if you deny the truth of your feelings. Happiness is not blissful joy in every moment. Happiness is struggling well toward your desires. Happiness is listening to your heart, not the fear in your head. Happiness is BEING YOU. Loving you – all of you – even the dark places! Did you know that diamonds are bright not just because of “light” but also because of the contrast in their darkness? Same is true for us humans!

Fear is a very real human emotion and you must move through it to have joy! It's when you don't move through it that you're unhappy. Most people let fear and anxiety rule them and thus they don't follow their purpose to joy! It's when you fight your feelings and make yourself wrong for them that you create further struggle and self-loathing. Believe me, I know.

The truth is that fear is human. That's right. We can't be “fearless” because we are animals and have the fear response in order to save our lives when a predator attacks. Anxiety is human too. It alerts you to potential danger. The key is knowing what's a real predator and when there is real danger. A figure chasing you with a knife in a dark alley = real danger. Run. Tornado warning on your radio = real danger. Get shelter. Showing your real, true self to the world. Asking people for help. Admitting you don't know how to do something. Wanting something desperately but not knowing how to make it happen. All potential dangers – not real. They feel real. Oh yeah – they feel VERY real. Because at some point you got burned. You showed yourself in 4th grade and were rejected, or you asked for help at home and were told to be independent. So yeah, it feels very dangerous.

Your anxiety is doing its job to protect you. Thank you Anxiety. And it's not necessary in these cases. Now it is holding you back. It's been holding me back for sure.

Here's my BIG DREAM: To create a MOVEMENT. A real movement to INSPIRE PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIVING. In addition to coaching, groups and retreats (which I love), I want EVERY PERSON to live his or her purpose. To be a PurposeGirl or PurposeDude, for us all to be PurposePeople. For each of us to uncover our purpose and live our true destiny!! That's HAPPINESS!!!!

And… I have no idea how to start a movement. I need help with social media platforms like how to do a Podcast and enroll others in listening, and I need connections to media outlets like TV stations and LiveHappy, I need to know how to scale my message to make it easy to understand and follow. I have so many ideas – a quiz to help you identify where you are in the PurposeProcess, products to proudly tout what kind of “PurposeGirl” you are, a signature workshop for corporate employees to align their purpose to the company mission, weekly PurposeParty shows where I interview someone living their purpose to show you how you can too, an online blog/magazine with other contributors. Giving you the info, showing you the way.

And it all terrifies me and sometimes makes me want to go to bed!

But I can't go back to bed. I have these ideas because they are meant to come to fruition. EVERY DREAM YOU HAVE WAS GIVEN TO YOU TO ACHIEVE. I have been given this purpose from G-d, just like you. I now just have to surrender and ask the Universe for help. For a speaking agent, for marketing help, for sponsors to move the movement forward. I'm ashamed I haven't moved more forward, but according to Brene Brown, shame can only live in dark places. So here I am bringing it into the light. Asking for your ideas to carry the mission forward. Asking you to identify your own purpose so we can all move forward together. We can't let fear and anxiety stop us. We must lean on each other and breathe together in love to move forward. Humans are pack animals. Together is how we've survived for thousands of years. So, let's do this together. This Purpose Promise thing. You can do it. I can do it. We can do it.

Valentine's Love for You

Happy Valentines Day! Cozy up because I taped a self-love video for you yesterday.

I've been sitting with this question a lot lately: What is self-love?

We shower others with kind words and gifts, but often douse ourselves with doubt, loathing, and fear.

I was in Columbus yesterday speaking to 200 HR professionals and when I asked how many people were felt like they were thriving – really living on all cylinders, taking good care of their bodies, filling their souls with nourishing relationships, accepting their whole selves, going after their dreams, and thriving with purpose, only 1 person raised her hand.

I get it. In the day to day grind, it's challenging to take care of yourself.

Yet you want your kids to thrive. You want your friends to thrive.

You deserve to thrive too. Self-love is the foundation of purpose.

You must give yourself the love you want from others. If you want your partner to respect you, respect yourself enough to set boundaries and listen to your inner yearnings. If you want to be accepted for who you are, accept even your ugliest darkest parts. If you want a lover to shower you with tender words, say those words to yourself.

Self-love isn't easy. But it is necessary to live the life of purpose, fulfillment and joy that you desire.

Self-love means that you accept your whole self, forgive your past mistakes, and have compassion for the youngest parts of you that were hurt and still live inside. Self-love means that you trust your intuition when it has a spark of a dream or desire. Self-love means that you give yourself gifts to flourish.

Unfortunately, most of us don't know how to love ourselves. So in this video, I share what self-love is, my own struggles and journey with it, and tips to begin your own self-love journey.

Happiness Isn't What You Think

In our chase for happiness, we are actually making ourselves miserable.

Yesterday, I gave a talk called “Happiness 101” at a school. A teacher raised her hand and said, “We've gone too far with happiness. These parents won't let their child fail because they want them to just be “happy” – it's not teaching them anything.”

Amen! Some teachers said that parents focus too much on grades and getting into the best colleges. Others talked about how kids see happiness in their phone or car, yet they are bored, stressed, anxious, on anti-depressants, and/or have eating disorders.

And let's face it: We're just like these kids. We think that getting a raise or losing 20 lbs. or buying new shoes will make us happier.

We've been searching for happiness in all the wrong places. Happiness is not external. It is fulfilling yourself inside your soul.

Sure, losing weight will make you happier for a moment, but inside, you will still be in pain. Even a new job won't give you lasting well-being if that job doesn't fulfill your soul.

We need to change the conversation to a deeper kind of happiness – to flourishing. To fulfillment. To overall well-being and satisfaction with life.

To have fulfillment, you must be living in alignment with your heart's desires and soul's yearnings.

To flourish, you must be resilient to life's many obstacles and learn how to come back stronger. You must experience see life with a curious, open, growth mindset.

To feel satisfied, you must appreciate all you have, and all that has happened – the triumphs and the traumas. You must be content, knowing that you have lived fully.

Together, this is “Living on Purpose.” Feeling happy in the depth of your soul and spirit, being courageous and strong in the face of failure, taking risks to make a difference in the world in your own unique way.

Are you living on purpose? Ask yourself these 3 questions:

Have I been ignoring the voice inside that tells me of dreams buried deep in my heart, and not taking action on them?
Have I been allowing my fears, shame, or guilt to hold me back from doing things I want to do?
If I were to die tomorrow, would I feel content that I lived and lived well, fully using my time and energy?

You're Here for Purpose

Are you feeling as called to Purpose as I am right now? Like you want to DO something? Even if you don't know what to do?

Me too. There is so much opportunity with a new year, and also so much chaos and conflict that I want to participate in, that I hardly know where to start. I've felt overwhelmed, excited, hopeful, hopeless, and all of the above.

Then in meditation today, I heard a clear message: You don't have to do everything, Carin. Just do your part.

That gave me such relief. I don't have to do it all. I can't. And I don't have to do it all today. I just need to do ask “How can I serve today?”

I can inspire more women to speak their truth. I can encourage more people to listen to their hearts. I can empower others to believe in themselves. I can be kind to everyone I meet. I can create loving dialogue on Facebook. I can send you this email.

One of these acts alone may not change the world, but can you imagine how the world will shift when we are all collectively doing our parts? Not to mention the ripple effect from one small act of grace? We hold so much power!

You may not yet be living your ultimate dream or even know what that dream is, but you still can live on purpose today. In my EMPOWERED Sisterhood yesterday, one woman shared that she helped a teen in crisis by simply telling him that he doesn't have to live by his old “I'm not good enough” story anymore. Her one piece of wisdom saved his life and left her fulfilled and happy for days.

You too have inherent strengths, like creativity or leadership, that shine when you are at your best. You too have wisdom garnered from years of pain, triumph, strength, and courage. You too have a voice that can help one person.

So what about you? What is your part? What can you do today? What WILL you do today?

You are here for purpose and the world needs you living on purpose now more than ever.
