have a confession to make: Life has felt a bit overwhelming lately. Maybe you’ve been there too? Feeling like life is moving SO fast, SO furious that you can't get a grip?
Here’s the good news: you can. Every day is a new opportunity to choose a new way. Today, you can take control of your life and CLAIM your happiness. (Watch this video to learn more)
That’s what I did recently. I realized that my life was controlling me instead of me controlling it, so I chose a new way. I chose to remember what makes me happy. (Yes, even a Positive Psychology Coach needs to practice this stuff every day.) I chose exercise, meditation, writing down my gratitude list, engaging in my favorite activities. When I know that positive emotions like joy and inspiration increase creativity, help to build relationships and shift my brain over time, how can I NOT make time for these activities?
I know – you may be thinking that you don’t have time to take care of you. You have kids to take care of, clients to call, the boss to please, the laundry to do! But let me ask you this – Do you have time NOT to claim your happiness?
Maybe you are mindlessly eating, screaming at your kids, crying nonstop, tossing and turning at night, picking at your skin or biting your nails. Of course you are! We are on information overload and our minds are buzzing in chaos. In fact, a recent study found that nearly half of us are not focused on whatever we’re currently doing. And in that space, we’re less happy, more stressed and we’re definitely not as loving and connected. Knowing that meditation reduces stress, increases focus, improves creativity and improves relationships… knowing that Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey found that exercise helps our brain, mood, relationships, and body, how can we NOT make time for us first??
In tT=his week's PurposeFULL message, I share how you can claim your happiness and truly flourish. Watch this video to learn how!
1. Scan for the stressed out signs: you’re eating everything in sight, yelling at innocent people, crying over what seems like nothing, spending money on things you don’t need, picking at your skin… Notice these things, breathe and say “Thank you” to the universe for telling you that you need to choose a new way. Don't beat yourself up for these behaviors – know that they are signs that you need to make a change.
2. Ask yourself when you have felt grounded, centered, at peace and happy. What were you doing? With whom? Were you walking in the park? Taking an aerobics class? And if you can’t recall those things, then consider new exercise, meditation or a different hobby, like painting. Then schedule these activities FIRST. Before you pencil in your kids’ doctors appointments and another business meeting, YOU come first. Then you will be healthier and more focused to care for others.
3. Stay on track. We all fall off track sometimes and need to get back on. Sometimes we’re so lost that we have no idea where to start. A coach or therapist can help you sort out what will make you happy and keep you on track. You don’t have to go at it alone.
