Angela Duckworth is the Founder and CEO of Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development. She is also the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change For Good Initiative, and faculty co-director of Wharton People Analytics.
A 2013 MacArthur Fellow, Angela has advised the White House, the World Bank, NBA and NFL teams, and Fortune 500 CEOs.
Prior to her career in research, Angela founded a summer school for low-income children that was profiled as a Harvard Kennedy School case study and, in 2018, celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. She has also been a McKinsey management consultant and a math and science teacher in the public schools of New York City, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.
Angela completed her undergraduate degree in Advanced Studies Neurobiology at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude. With the support of a Marshall Scholarship, she completed an MSc with Distinction in Neuroscience from Oxford University. She completed her PhD in Psychology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.
Angela has received numerous awards for her contributions to K-12 education, including a Beyond Z Award from the KIPP Foundation. Angela’s TED talk is among the most-viewed of all time. Her first book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, is a #1 New York Times best seller.
Barbara L. Fredrickson, Ph.D. is Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab (a.k.a. PEP Lab) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University, with a minor in organizational behavior. Among the most highly cited and influential scholars in psychology, her research has been by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NCI, NIA, NCCAM, NIMH, NINR). Dr. Fredrickson has published >100 peer-reviewed articles and her general audience books, Positivity(2009, Crown, www.PositivityRatio.com) and Love 2.0(2013, Penguin, www.PositivityResonance.com) have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Dr. Fredrickson’s scholarly contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the inaugural Templeton Prize in Positive Psychology from the American Psychological Association, the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the inaugural Christopher Peterson Gold Medal from the International Positive Psychology Association, and the Tang Prize for Achievements in Psychology, awarded to recognize exceptional career contributions to the well-being of humanity. Dr. Fredrickson also served as President of the International Positive Psychology Association from 2015-2017. Dr. Kenael Segal graduated from Rutgers University with a doctoral degree in physical therapy and an intense passion for helping women heal their bodies. She has experience treating a wide variety of patients as young as a few months old to as "wise" as 92. She has treated and continues to treat the typical orthopedic conditions as well as a host of many other conditions including gait and balance disorders, Parkinson's Disease, chronic regional pain syndrome, multiple sclerosis, fibroymalagia, pelvic pain, and developmental delays. As rewarding as it is to treat such a variety of patients and conditions, treating women, specifically prenatal and postpartum conditions has become somewhat of an obsession. In addition to a doctorate, Dr. Segal has pursued additional course work addressing conditions such as pregnancy and postpartum care, pelvic floor, and spinal conditions and specialized treatment techniques such as visceral manipulation. Dr. Segal is also trained in mat Pilates as well as comprehensively trained in the use of a variety of Pilates apparatus through Beacon Pilates.
When not working, Dr. Segal is a busy mama of two beautiful children, wife, and "Jack of all trades," as described by some that know her. She enjoys the outdoors, gardening, yoga, painting, and most recently, woodworking. Kristin Neff is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion over a decade ago. In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic, she is author of the book "Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself," released by William Morrow. Elaine O’Brien, PhD, MAPP, is a woman’s health/fitness/thriving specialist/strategist. Through her positive psychology and fitness/science research and applications, Dr. O’Brien helps people reduce the risk of inactivity, depression, loneliness, and (heart) disease. Elaine designs strategies for creating sustainable positive energy connections, positive determination (“determinability”), and more love at home, work and play. Elaine has wowed audiences, speaking across the U.S., Europe, Canada, Asia, Mexico, and translating her positive energy, knowledge, and joyful somatic approaches to learning, healing, meaning, enjoyment and high performance. Her programs and writings in textbooks, professional journals, books, including Thriving Women Thriving World, blogs, and podcasts aim to lift up and support women and families.
Elaine helped develop the first standards and guidelines ensuring safety and quality in fitness education practices with Educational Testing Service and the IDEA Foundation. Elaine produced/hosted, “Fitness with Elaine,” a cable TV show, served Judge/Coach/Trainer/Director for the National Aerobics Championship, produced/choreographed the first National Football League Halftime Show Fundraiser.
Elaine is an IPPA Positive Health/Wellness Leader and Editor-in-Chief of the University of Penn MAPP Alumni Magazine. Dr. O’Brien is hired by corporations, universities, groups, governments, AARP, the medical/health community, and the U.S. Army. Elaine encourages people to build positive connections, and to move your healthy body, mind and heart to fortify yourself, and others in the world.
