Do You Have a Purpose?

I just want to feel alive and free. I just want to wake up every day excited. I just want to stop feeling so stuck and lost and unhappy.

Words from a new client last week when I asked her, “One year from today, how do you want to feel about life?”

I totally get this. I too used to daydream about feeling lit up and excited about life. I wanted to do work that filled me, work that made a difference, work that was my purpose, but it was overwhelming and confusing and seemed lofty. Like who the heck was I to think I had a “purpose?” Get over it, Carin. You have a good life – just be happy with it.

But the feeling of being stuck didn't go away; it only got louder.

Until I got robbed at gunpoint and I had to start taking my heart seriously. I realized then that time isn't a luxury and that life isn't meant to be stuck. So listen to me loud and clear, Joshua:

Every single one of us is born for purpose. Even my client. Even you.

There's a unique way that you can impact the world that I can't because you have different strengths than I have, you have different talents, your life experiences have given you different wisdom, and you have a completely different circle of influence than me.

You are needed.

Your Strengths: No two of us have the same strengths – the natural way that you influence and live in the world.
Strengths are who you are. You may be creative while your best friend is analytical. However, you have to accept your strengths and stop wishing you were someone else. One of my clients has a great strength in appreciating beauty and had longed to be an artist. However, everyone in her family is a doctor, so she devalued her strength of beauty. She hid it and in doing so, made herself unhappy and off purpose. She didn't have to choose between being a healer and an artist; she had to embrace her strength and bring it to every aspect of her life. The key to living your purpose is to know your strengths and embrace them as uniquely yours.

Your Talents: No two of us have the same talents – the honed skills that you use to serve. Talents are what you do. One of my clients was gifted at event planning, but she thought it was “smarter” to learn finance and import/export, so she found herself in a “great” career, but unhappy. You have talents that are your own and you need to embrace them. The challenge is that you may not recognize your talents because they come so naturally to you, or you recognize them but downplay them because you feel like a fraud, or you feel like you can't make money on your talents. Like maybe you're not really a good writer; your college professor was probably just being nice. Nope. You're a great writer and you can become even better with practice. The key to living your purpose is to hone your talents and give them to the world.

Your Passions: No two of us have the same passions – the causes, interests, or populations that get you excited, make you heartbroken, or juice up your motivation. Passions are what lights you up. For me, it's all about young girls and women standing in their power, speaking their voice, rising to the challenge, and living their heart's true purpose. I love seeing a girl boldly stand up for the kid being bullied. I love seeing a young woman rise above abuse to go to college. I love seeing a woman stand up for her heart and go for her dreams – even if they make no sense to her husband, her parents, or “society” at large. What are you passionate about? If it's art, start painting now. If it's theater, go volunteer at your local playhouse. The key to living your purpose is to begin taking a stand for your passions now.

Your Wisdom: No two of us has lived the same life experiences so you have wisdom that is all your own. As life shows me again and again, it's hard. You're going to have hardship and pain. You're going to have loss. The question is what you do with all of it. Will you let the pain take you down or will you find the wisdom within and share that wisdom with others who need it? A 69-year old client of mine recently shared her story of marital pain with her EMPOWERED sisters and every woman was so grateful because they needed her wisdom. Whatever you've learned, don't squander it for yourself. Wisdom from trauma and triumph is the heart of a woman's purpose – and we need you sharing it!

You have purpose. You are needed. Especially in this crazy world, you're need now more than ever.

Use this motivation to make it a powerful week.

With all my love,
Carin

Monday SPARK: Be Intentional

Intention Directs Attention, Which Dictates ACTION

Your SPARK for this week: Set Intentions.

This weekend was Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year. It's our holiday to reflect and re-calibrate with our heart, soul, and purpose.

Life gets so chaotic, so busy that often it controls you instead of you controlling it. If you're like most of us, the kids have carpool, the report needs to be written, there's laundry to do again, and before you know it, months or years pass and you wonder where time has gone.

In the absence of controlling your mind and life, it will control you. This is why you must be intentional. Research shows that what you set your intention on, you put your attention to. And we know that whatever you put your attention on, your action follows.

This is why I love coaching: Different than therapy (which I love for different reasons,) coaching intentionally directs your life by looking forward at how you want to feel, who you want to be, and what you want in your life.

Our rabbi coached us perfectly this weekend. He gave us postcards from doyou10Q.com with intentional questions. Each one has an inquiry about where we want to be next year. I love them so much that I'm going to bring them to you throughout the next 6 weeks as weekly Monday SPARKS. Each week, I'll send you an inquiry for you to journal on and  set the intention for your life.

Here's your first one:

By this time next year, I'll explore…

Do you want to explore your purpose? Do you want to explore mindfulness? A new career? Travel to different countries? Study a new topic?

I'd love to hear what you're wanting to explore. Email me and as always, if you're stuck and I can help you figure it out, let me know.

To your Intention setting…

With so much love,
Carin

Feeling Stuck or Down? This Easy Tip Will Help!

I'm SO excited! I'm on a bus to NYC for the week, so I'll make this quick. I was feeling stuck recently and asked myself 3 critical questions that have have seriously skyrocketed my feeling of empowerment and joy! Researcher David Cooperrider of Case Western Reserve University says that when we want a different answer, we have to ask a different question.

Why I was stuck… When I married Josh I gave up my dream of living in New York. My compromise was to live in Philly until his son graduated high school, under one condition – we would never move to the suburbs. It's not that I have anything against the suburbs; they just don't feed my soul like a city does. I need lots of diverse people, art, noise, and lights to feed my creative fire.

But then the city public schools became worse. Then his son's mom had some personal issues. And everyone agreed that the suburban school was the right place for him.

So off to the suburbs I went. We bought a beautiful house and I tried to have a good attitude, but with every passing day, I've felt more stuck. And the more stuck I feel, the more resentful I become of Josh. It's been super hard – especially since I'm always telling you that you must follow your heart's desires and soul's dreams no matter what!

But this is how it goes for all of us. You know what you want or you have an idea, but you make a compromise for someone you love, or you become afraid because someone said it was silly or selfish. So you back away from your idea and then feel small, caged, stuck, and even resentful or angry.

So I used my 3 favorite happiness + success questions and found a perfect solution that I'm SOOO excited about!!

1. How Can I? For two years, I've told myself “I can't live in New York City.” I convinced myself that I was stuck, and as a free spirit, that kind of cage was just making me more miserable and resentful. So recently, I used my favorite question, “How can I?” to see what else was possible. That's when my coach suggested that I live in NYC 3 days a week – that I commute, like so many do. It was so simple. So easy. Like, “duh!” Why didn't I think of that? To be honest, I had, and Josh had, but I had been scared. I didn't want him to resent me. I thought I was selfish for wanting it. I projected that it would be too expensive and it just wasn't feasible. I'm sure you get this. I'm sure you have all sorts of things you want to do that you tell yourself are impossible. You make up stories that people will be upset with you. You project what will go wrong. We all do this – and there go our dreams and our happiness.

So every time you hear yourself say, “I can't do that… it's too expensive… it's too risky… it's not practical” (etc, etc), ask, “How Can I?” and watch how this empowered stance instantly makes you feel happier and stronger!

2. Who Can Help? So when you have an idea but you have no idea how to do it, this is your next happiness + success question. When my coach suggested this 3-days-in-NY idea, I had no idea how to find an apartment for just a few days and I didn't want to spend $2000/month on one. So I asked my brain, “Who can help?” Instantly, I thought of 2 people who have back apartments out of use. One is a woman that I just met, but who recently offered for me to stay during an impending snowstorm. I didn't end up needing it then, but how awesome that she had JUST offered this! So, I emailed her and though I can't stay here regularly, she's letting me stay this week to see how I like the 3-days idea!! And here's how amazing the Universe (and this woman) is – she lives ON CENTRAL PARK. I have a huge beautiful space with a private bathroom and entrance…. It's heaven.

So get some help – even if it's scary or you don't like asking, or you feel guilty. People want to help. Ask friends if they know someone who can help, go through your mental roladex, or reach out to a coach for guidance and support.

3. What is the NEXT step I can take? Sometimes, we become paralyzed because an idea is too big or it seems too much of a long-shot, so we just give up. This is when we must narrow down to one step. The first step of this NY idea was to talk to Josh. I was nervous and scared! This is where a lot of us chicken out, but I took a deep breath and told him my idea. He gave me a hug. He said he understood, and though it isn't his first choice for our marriage, he knows it will make me happy, and therefore, probably make our marriage better. (Great guy, right?!)

Then came the next step – email people (see above). Then the next one, to try it out once, and here I am, on this bus. Renting a whole apartment felt too big right now, so I just needed to do it once and see. Then if I like it, do it once more. And then once more. And then in time, if it's the right solution for my own success and happiness, then we'll rent more permanent space.

So boil it down to one small step. Then another small step. Just one. If you want to write a book, take out a pen. If you want to become a Vice President, download a book on leadership. One step and watch how taking action leads to more action!

friend, I've used these 3 questions to do everything in life – from pursuing my purpose to moving across the country to creating my first retreat in Paris. It always works!

So what have you been wanting to do that would make you happier and/or more successful? Ask for a promotion? Learn a new skill? Start a business? Pursue a creative purpose?

Ask yourself these 3 questions and watch yourself take flight! And again, if you need help, reach out. Email me here! I have space for 2 new coaching clients and I'd be happy to host a free 30 minute consultation with you to discover how you can achieve your goals and to see if coaching is for you.

With so much love!
XO,
Carin
