Are You Pretending? Do You Live By SHOULDS?

“I don’t know what I want.”
“I just want to be happy.”
“I feel lost.”

When I first met Libby, she was the first to admit she was not living the life she had dreamt of for herself. Although she kept appearances expertly, her life felt hollow.

The thing was, to all outside observers, Libby looked like she had it all together. She looked happy. The online version of Libby was thriving: she went to Princeton, she made a great paycheck at a hot new startup in San Francisco. When people asked how she was doing she told them she was Great! In that false chipper voice that only half disguised how unhappy she really was.

But underneath she was in deep pain. She was on autopilot, hammering through her days, toughing it out until the weekend when she drowned out the emptiness every way she knew how.

She was cruel to her body.
She numbed her pain.
She pretended her way through life.

When we first met, I asked her what she really wanted – deeply, truly wanted.
And then we got clear what was getting in her way of having it.
I took her through powerful exercises to get clear on the masks Libby was wearing: all the SHOULDS in her life that were trapping her in unhealthy patterns.

It turns out that Libby’s SHOULDS had a powerful hold on her. Maybe you can relate. After untangling a web of fears keeping her from living her most joyful life, we got clear on Libby’s innermost desire: she wanted to be a writer.

Step by step, we created her path to purpose.
She first left her tech sales job and city life in San Francisco to travel the world.
She then started caring for her body, mind, and spirit.
And now, she has nearly finished her first book.

Libby transitioned from living a life of SHOULDS to a life of purpose, and it has completely transformed her life.

Every single one of us has an innate, deep-seated purpose in life, and when we peel back the layers of SHOULDS, when we drop the masks, when we discover who we truly are and what we deeply desire, we step into our true selves and greatest happiness.

Happy Monday: Get Unstuck and Move Forward [Video]

I spent this past weekend co-leading a retreat about ALCHEMY. It may seem far-fetched, but you really can turn anything into gold.

Here's how: You move forward.

Rather than letting an obstacle stop you, or a fear derail you, or a disappointment dissuade you, you move forward. I've had to overcome so many challenges on this road. I've launched programs that no one signed up for. I've been rejected by media. I've had people write online that they don't like me. And it HURTS. But my mission is bigger than me, and yours is bigger than you. So I dust off and change my perspective or approach or contact.

And it's all been worth it because the pain of regret is unbearable. 

Research shows that happier people take steps toward their goals with grit and perseverance and feel better when they've achieved. In today's episode of Happy Monday, I share why and how to continue moving forward toward your dreams – and if you don't know your dreams, then I share a process to get you started. Happy Monday: The Science of HOPE

This morning I'm feeling renewed hope that it's the best time to be alive. So, I'm super excited to introduce my new free weekly short video series for you to be happier, live your purpose and love your life: Happy Monday.

If you're like me, you dread Mondays. I love what I do for a living, but it can still feel like a drag getting out of bed on Monday and starting work again.

Yet, how we start our week makes the difference in how the week goes. Start your week frustrated, bitter, and angry and negativity will follow you. Start your week energized and motivated, you're more likely to achieve what you want.

So I'm excited to share my new weekly YouTube video series: Happy Monday. In these super short clips, I'll share how you can live your happiest, best week. Today's episode is all about HOPE. 5 Surprising Happiness Hacks

Think about a time you felt really happy.
Like blood joyfully dancing in your veins happy.
Or peace calming your whole body happy.
Or deep soul fulfillment happy…
What were you doing? Who were you with? How did you feel inside? While each of us finds happiness in different places – for you it may be on the ski slopes, and for your best friend in the boardroom – positive psychology research shows that there are 5 proven paths to happiness that are easy to do with a bit of intention: P-E-R-M-A.
1. POSITIVITY over Negativity
OK, so this may seem like a no-brainer, but the fact is that our brains have something called “negativity bias.” It's easier to focus on the negative and we all do it unconsciously. However, it makes us miserable!!! A client was just telling me how she's become a complainer at work because everyone else is complaining. Another finds constant fault with her husband. And, most of my clients have negative brain chatter about themselves all day long. If you want to be happy, you need to get intentional about positivity.
  • An easy hack: Daily Happiness – Do ONE thing every day that makes you happy. Whether that's taking a walk in the park, coloring, or working on a purpose idea, if you know that you HAVE to do a happy hack every day, you're more likely to do it, look forward to it, and savor it. One of my clients did this for a month and it changed her happiness for at least a year later.
2. ENGAGE, PLAY, BE
We're so busy running around doing-doing that we often miss the moment we're in. I was speaking at a conference for female
attorneys when a woman shared, “Oh my goodness, I was bathing my daughter last night and on my cell phone the whole time.” We've all done this and to be happier, you need to get present. Turn off your phone at dinner, go play with your child, sit in nature for 10 minutes, bring your mind back when it wanders.
  • Here's a hack: Find an activity that puts you in flow – one where you lose track of time and focus solely on the joy at hand. You may think you don't have time for it, but you actually don't have time to not do it. Your brain needs to be present and to be in flow to be happy. One of my clients resisted this but once she joined a singing group, she not only became happier, but a group member offered her a job because of her attitude!
3. Relationships you LOVE
Humans are social creatures. We need each other to thrive, but research shows that in our busy lives, spending quality time with friends is one of the first things to go. Deep down, we're hungry for connection but instead, we stuff ourselves with food, alcohol and social media. In my groups, women are consistently amazed that they become best friends the first day of the retreat. Of course they do – we're all hungry for real relationships where we can cry, laugh, scream, be heard, and be held without judgement. We need people who believe in us and lift us up!
  • Happiness hack: Put boundaries (like not always answering the phone) around the negative draining relationships in your life (you know which ones they are) and get vulnerable with like-minded souls. Go on a retreat, find a sisterhood, let yourself connect deeply – even when it's scary – and you'll never feel alone again.
4.  Meaning and Purpose
You want to matter. You want to feel like you're making a difference in life and that there's some special way you're impacting the world. Purpose makes you feel fulfilled and we thrive when we have it. Unfortunately, most people don't know their purpose or even where to look for it. Or, you have an inkling of what you'd like to do but you've been too afraid to do it. Your inner voice says, Who are you to write a book? Or: You can't make money singing!  However, you must. The dream never goes away. The yearning never subsides. If you don't know what your purpose is or you're too afraid to go for it, decide to start figuring it out!
  • Purpose hack: Start where you are and take the pressure off! Get curious about when you love being you and do more of that. Think you may love teaching? Volunteer one day with kids. An example: One of my clients wanted to empower high school girls but couldn't figure out how to turn it into a career so I suggested that she do it at her church. Another one of my clients – a top corporate exec who wants to teach meditation – started a weekly meditation class at her company. Or, do my free Living on Purpose guide to get you started!
5. Achieve!
When you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, depressed, and stuck, the last thing you want to do is take action. However, that's exactly what you need. Action is the best antidote to depression. Action puts you into motion. Action creates momentum. Action makes you feel good about yourself, which in turn leads to more action.
  • Hack: Pick one thing on your to do list you've been procrastinating on, but it will make your heart happy to do it, and do that. Even if you're afraid – especially if you're afraid – do it. Today. NOW! Then CELEBRATE yourself for doing it!!! Your brain loves celebration because it tells the brain to do more of that, so have a party and keep yourself achieving what's in your heart.
So there you have it – 5 Surprising Happiness Hacks. I know – they're not very surprising… or are they? These seem like common sense, but love, if they're so obvious, why don't we do them? What's surprising about them is how easy it is to take small steps toward a life that makes you feel great.

She Finally Feels Happy

“And one day she discovered that she was fierce, and strong, and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passion burned brighter than her fears.”  – Unknown

Have you ever had an experience so incredible that it was hard to put into words? An experience so beautiful and profound that it opened your heart and elevated your soul, but the English language is horribly insufficient for such awe?

That's how I feel about this past weekend.

This weekend, 25 loving, inspiring, courageous women joined me and Taylor Strecker for Goddess Girls Retreat, and our lives are forever changed.

Imagine feeling safe to share your deepest fears, most secret truths, and greatest hopes – things you haven’t even shared with close friends or family because you’re too afraid of their reaction – and receiving unconditional love, encouragement and support for it all – a hand on your back, someone passing you tissues, hearing that you’re going to be okay.

Imagine sharing your biggest dream – the one that seems silly and impossible and irresponsible – and hearing how AMAZING you’ll be at it!!

Imagine others seeing your truth – seeing your strength when you feel weak, seeing your sweetness when you feel judgmental, seeing your wisdom when you feel broken – and being loved for being yourself.

Imagine laughing for hours with friends for life as you run into the ocean with your clothes on, dance under the moon with abandon, and sip champagne by the pool.

Imagine the kind of sisterhood you’ve always wanted!

As one woman shared, “I've never made such deep friendships in one day before! I truly feel like they're sisters for life.”

Each woman was different – and the same. They had different stories, but similar hearts. One wants a divorce, another struggles with her daughter, and another is finding herself after her kids are out of the house, but under the fear, shame and guilt is the same beautiful spirit wanting to feel alive and free and happy again.

As one woman who lost her job and went through months of struggle shared, “I was driving home and just smiling. I realized I feel happy… just happy.”

You too have a Goddess within. Being a Goddess is being adored for who you are. It's walking with self-confidence, knowing and listening to your heart, and allowing yourself to pursue your desires. It's adoring yourself enough to put your heart first, knowing that when you take care of you, you better take care of others. 

And they're already seeing changes in their lives – feeling more patient with kids, being more present at work, feeling confident to end an unhealthy relationship or to start a new career.

This level of growth is possible for you too. All it takes is an open heart, a hopeful spirit, and a supportive Sisterhood.

Something magical happens when women come together in openness, vulnerability, mutual support, and a desire to grow into the empowered women they were born to be. This kind of growth is ONLY possible in Sisterhood.
